Our production aims to entertain, educate, and normalize the second most spoken language in Louisiana. With lessons in history, mathematics, geography, science, and vocabulary, each episode explores various aspects of Louisiana’s cultural landscape while incorporating subject matter that all children learn in early education. "Boudini et Ses Amis" is also tailored to be used as a tool to teach students Cajun and Creole language across all age groups, from elementary school students to adults. It includes lighthearted humor and references to South Louisiana folktales and historical figures. Teacher of the Year finalist and French Immersion teacher Jessica Joy Stalnaker has created quizzes and games to go along with the episodes. The scripts are translated and proofread by longtime French educator and Cajun French expert Phoebe Trotter alongside fellow Louisiana French instructor Kirby Jambon and Creole musician and cultural torchbearer Cedric Watson. Wats0n also contributes to the rich swamp sounds that make up the series soundtrack along with Billeaudeaux and the late Chris Stafford.
Lac Bijou's most ambitious magician, Boudini leads his friends on adventures throughout Louisiana and beyond. Unlikely superheroes, Boudini and his sidekicks, Coco and Colinda fight to save their culture and homeland while supporting each other in their own pursuits. Often faced with adversity, the magician is forced to look within to help save the day, and fulfill his personal aspirations as a performer. The showman is based on the legendary real life Acadiana entertainer Ken Meaux; an illusionist and TV personality, “The Great Boudini,” as well as the illustrator of Bec Doux et Ses Amis, the first French comic strip in the Bayou State. Veteran French Immersion teacher Kirby Jambon of Lafayette voices the show’s main character. .
A native of the Atchafalaya swamp, Coco knows his environment better than anyone else. If he's not helping identify wildlife and flora in Lac Bijou, he's bravely on the frontline saving the day. The ex-fireman is now an ambitious accordionist and often shares the stage with Boudini and his musical partner Colinda. This character also pays homage to a character originally developed by Ken Meaux. The cape- wearing alligator is voiced by acclaimed 4- time Grammy- nominated Creole accordionist and fiddler Cedric Watson.
The little robot that could. T-Bot, T-Boy's sidekick, hasn't let his handicaps stop him from being a team player. The android is quick to deliver vital information for the gang when called upon. His determination to stick it out with only one arm is less pride and more about acceptance, although T-Boy has offered to "lend a hand" more than once.
With roots in both the Crescent City and rural St. Landry Parish, Colinda has much to offer when it comes to Creole culture. Along with her family's traditions, Colinda is also a budding scholar with great knowledge in history with a speciality in genealogy. Her other talents include being an active skateboarder and guitarist–an a aficionado of the traditional French songs of Louisiana as her namesake, “Allons Danser Colinda,” suggests. Aaliyah Walker, an alumnai of the French Immersion program at Lafayette High School, and current university undergraduate student in Texas, voices the heroine of the series. .
Don't judge a book by its cover. Although T-Boy may seem a little rough around the edges, his skills in technology and machinery are more than his natural Cajun ingenuity. Lac Bijou's top mechanic spends his time providing aid to Boudini and company in between repairing boats and automobiles in his native Atchafalaya Basin homeland. The master engineer is voiced by Grammy- winning fiddler and leader of the Lost Bayou Ramblers, Louis Michot. Don't judge a book by its cover.
